Background

The main objective of the project was to create the conditions for more successful integration of students from ethnic minorities who have dropped out or are threatened to drop out of the educational process by enhancing their motivation for inclusion in the educational process and providing opportunities for physical, personal development.

"Children are what we are" was the subtitle of the project that united the efforts of the library, the school and the parents for the successful integration of pupils into the learning process through forms of activity that enable personal development.

Target group of the project were students from second and third grade of ethnic minorities in Hristo Smirnenski Primary School.

Practice

Activities:

- Initiation of the project - working meeting of the partners; a work plan for the activities; appointing heads of children's clubs; publications about the project; creating a project webpage as part of the the Chitalishte's website; meeting with parents and getting acquainted with planned activities;

- Children's Club "Roma around the World" - gathering materials, preparing presentations, making masks of kukeri, restoration of holidays and traditions, exhibition;

- Children's Club "My Language - My Friend" - learning tales, dramatizing fairy tales, educational games and tasks; writing competition; participating in a reading marathon, working with dictionaries and reference books in the children's department of a library;

- Children's Club "The Mirror" - mothers, grandmothers and children presented Roma feasts and traditions, organizing a joint holiday between the Chitalishte and the school under the title "Together we can more", organizing an exhibition.

Results

- Skills for use of Bulgarian language in bilingual students were improved through use od different forms and educational approaches;

- Students' motivation to participate in the educational process was enhanced through additional interesting activities in the library;

- Contacts and dialogue with the parents of children in the target group were made, as they are also participated in some of the project activities.

- Through this project the library of the chitalishte has affirmed its place as a city center for education and communication.
