[SLM Information Seminars] In the period 17 January, 2007 - 6 February, 2007 the Sustainable Land Management Project together with the Foundation for Local Government Reform organize series of 6 information seminars regarding the integration of SLM options in Municipal Development Plans 2007-2013.

The purpose of the seminars is to create good information environment with regard to sustainable land management policy, to increase the awareness and stimulate the participation of local communities in the process of forming of local priorities and objectives relevant to sustainable land management.

The seminars are being organized for representatives of municipalities belonging to the 6 Economic Planning Regions and are part of the activities for integrating SLM in municipal development plans undertaken by the SLM Project.

[Mrs. Ginka Kapitanova, FLGR Executive Director, recognized for contribution to European integration of Bulgarian regions] At official ceremony Mr. Asen Gagauzov, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, awarded to Mrs. Ginka Kapitanova, Foundation for Local Government Reform Executive Director, Honorary diploma for exceptional contribution to strengthening the partnership for sustainable integrated regional development of the Republic of Bulgaria as part of a Europe of regions.

The event was held on 4 January, 2007 at the Military Club ballroom. About 25 awards were given to representatives from district governments, municipalities, NGOs, media and business. UNDP Bulgaria and the European Commission Delegation to Bulgaria were the international organization distinguished. A number of the other awardees were mayors of Dobrich, Smolyan, and Gotse Delchev; the governors of Stara Zagora and Gabrovo; the National Business Development Network (from the JOBS project), the Birdlife Bulgaria; and Capital Newspaper.

[FLGR Consult Began the Work on a New Project] At the end of 2006 FLGR Consult won a project named "Planning of the Local Economic Development of the Municipality of Letnitsa" under the Active Services on the Labour Market Programme of the Employment State Agency.

The project activities started in January 2007 with 2 trainings for local formal and informal leaders on the topics "Planning of the Local Economic Development" and "Public-Private Partnerships. Industrial Zones". Lectors were Dilyana Kundeva and Nevena Mladenova, FLGR.

Other activities under the 6-month project will result in elaborating Local Economic Development Strategy, Action Plan, Communication Strategy and presenting the economic potential of the Municipality of Letnitsa in the investment website www.invest.bg

[Study Tour for LAGs] From 21 to 27 January, 2007 under the initiative of FLGR World Learning conducted study tour in Greece for representatives of Balkan Assist, FLGR and Bulgarian LAGs under the LEADER Programme from the municipalities Teteven and Yablanitsa, Kresna and Strumyani, Antonovo and Omurtag, Svoge, Boychinovtsi. The visit was funded by USAID and hosted by LAGs in Western Macedonia, Greece.

The participants had the opportunity to be informed about success projects and practices, implemented in the rural areas during the period 1994 - 2006. The new knowledge will be of enormous help in the work of the first LAGs in Bulgaria during the years 2007 - 2013.

[A Honorary Diploma] The results of the competition "IT Project of the Year 2006", organized by Computerworld Bulgaria were announced. In the category "Public Organizations" the Complex administrative services in the e-Region Blagoevgrad Project, initiated by FLGR and funded by USAID, was nominated.

A Honorary Diploma was handed to the regional governor of Blagoevgrad region Vladimir Dimitrov on January 26, 2007.

The project introduced a mechanism for document exchange between administrations and institutions on the basis of the contemporary information technologies in interest of citizens and business, it built on the whole experience in the field of the electronic government in Bulgaria till the present moment.

[Leadership Training] From 23 to 26 January, 2007 Mrs. Ginka Kapitanova, Executive Director of FLGR, took part in an executive training programme "21st Century Governance: Critical Skills for Leading and Sustaining Innovative Organizations" in Athens, Greece. The training was funded by the Kokkalis Programme.

Participants included ministers, deputy ministers, ambassadors and other senior government officials from 14 countries across Southeast Europe as well as Israel and Jordan. The program included instruction by Harvard professors and focused on negotiation, innovations in governance and strategic planning and management.
