Merry Christmas 2007!

[Municipality of Tundzha is the Innovative Municipality 2007] In December FLGR summarized the results of the 2007 National Annual Innovative Practices Contest. In this year's national contest participated 97 innovative practices from 27 municipalities, 1 professional and 5 regional associations of municipalities in Bulgaria.

The third place winner with input of 10 practices is the Municipality of Straldzha.

Second place goes to the Municipality of Svishtov with 14 innovative practices shared in 2007.

Municipality of Tundzha is the winner of the FLGR 2007 Innovative Municipality Contest with the input of 22 innovative practices!

Congratulations to the winners!

The awards will be officially presented to the winners in January 2008.

FLGR would like to thank all innovators that shared their innovative practices.

For the ninth year in a row, FLGR encourages, collects, publishes and disseminates Innovative Practices. The Innovative Practices Project started in September 1998 with the financial support of the Open Society Institute - Budapest and the United State Agency for International Development. This unique project provides a forum for the exchange of experience and has proved to be a sustainable model for collecting and disseminating innovative practices within Bulgarian local government system. From 2002 FLGR conducts Innovative Practices competitions on different topics and awards its Annual Innovative Municipality Award to municipalities that shared the most innovative practices within the current year.

[Useful Contacts and New Knowledge] With the FLGR support three representatives of the Bulgarian Local Economic Development Partnership participated in "Connecting EU Public Administrations Eastward" seminar. The event was organized by the Brussels office of Veneto region, Italy and took place from 28th until 30th November 2007 in Brussels. Possibilities for future cooperation between public administrations of the EU recently joined and candidate countries as well as the "old" EU countries were presented and discussed. The Brussels office of Veneto region, Italy, financially supported the participation of the three Bulgarian representatives in the seminar.

[Training for Municipal Councils] Foundation for Local Government Reform will conduct four training courses (two in December 2007 and two in January 2008) on development and management of projects funded by EU, commissioned by Friedrich Naumann Foundation. The participants in this training will be municipal councils from the country.

Main topics of the training include: what are the possibilities for financing projects in different sectors, how does a project cycle look like, how to define and measure indicators, and how to prepare a project's budget. The training is practically oriented with very limited theoretical part. It will last three days and during that time the participants will have the possibility to develop real project ideas within already launched funding programs.

[Annual Conference 2008] The Foundation for Local Government Reform invites the representatives of the Bulgarian local authorities and businesses to the Second Annual Conference "Municipalities and Business - Partners for Economic Development". The conference will be held on 18-19 February 2008 in Kempinski Hotel Zografski Sofia.

The Conference "Municipalities and Business - Partners for Economic Development" is an annual event that gives representatives of the public, private and non-governmental sectors to meet and discuss issues of common interest.

Topics this year are: Competitiveness of the Bulgarian municipalities in attracting investments; Bulgarian business and European Union; Latest tendencies in human resource development; Investment interest profile from EU, USA and Asia; Development of high-tech productions and innovations in Bulgaria; Sustainable development of protected areas.

The first plenary will be open by Mr. Jan Havelka, former executive director of CzechInvest, Czech Republic. Participants in the plenary sessions will be ministers; deputy minister; regional governors; mayors; deputy mayors; chairmen of municipal council; managers of leading companies; representatives of universities, business organizations; international and national experts on economic development.

In the first Annual Conference in 2006 more than 150 participants from Bulgaria, USA, Hungary, Korea, France, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Kosovo attended the forum.
