Background

The idea of implementing this project is prompted by the goals of Bikearea Association to work for sustainable management of the natural resources in Batashka Mountains as an approach for environmental protection. The problems at the resolution of which the association aims at related to the negative impacts of human activities in Beglika, the need to raise the public awareness of the target groups, and the improvement of the conditions for eco tourist activities as a means of sustainable development.

Practice

Main goal: Sustainable use of the natural resources on the territory of Batashka Mountains

Specific objectives:

>> Extension of the network of protected areas in the region: Comprehensive exploration of the biodiversity in the region has been made and the initial pack of documents for the Batashka Mountains Biosphere Park were developed.

>> Raising of public awareness and information provision: A number of information billboards as well as Forest Museum “Beglika” and information kiosk “Beglika” were created

>> Ecotourism development: Ecotourism products were created and presented to tour operators and media.

Results
  • The population of capercaillie, boreal owl, woodpecker, brown bear, wolf, fish and the flora of Beglika region were explored;
  • Analysis of the economical potential of the biodiversity of Beglika region was made;
  • 30 kids from the nearby towns participated in educational camp named “With a Scent of Resin”;
  • Three educational programmes for kids were developed;
  • Equipment for organisation of camps for children was secured, i.e. kayaks, mountain bikes, ropes and harnesses, helmets;
  • 3 eco tourist products were developed;
  • www.beglika.org websites was created;
  • 15 information billboards were created and installed in the vicinity of Beglika;
  • The Forest Museum of Beglika, with many information signs and modules, was created;
  • The Beglika information kiosk was set up.
