Background

The organizations, partners under the current project, have extensive experience in organizing volunteer campaigns and their activities are oriented towards young people. The topic of violence against children and youths as one of the most important problems of our society is often discussed at the meetings and the events which we carry out with them. That is how the idea was born for the development of a project to help systematize work on the solution of this important problem.

The needs of the target group were related to enhancing the capacity for protection of their civil rights, building local capacity for prevention of violence, building instructive and methodological competence for work with volunteers, support of volunteer initiatives and creation of a venue where the volunteers can communicate and get easy access to information.

Practice

The overall goal of the project is to increase social sensitivity in the municipality of Kyustendil towards violence against children and youths and to create mechanisms for protection of the rights of the vulnerable groups and prevention of violence.

The specific objectives of the project are:

-         To put the problem of violence against children and youths in the centre of the social debate by carrying out an information campaign, broadcasting a video clip, organizing TV discussions, creating a webpage.

-         Research, sharing and development of good practices for prevention of violence against children and youths through provision of access to information.

-         Building capacity of the organizations for work with volunteers and their active inclusion in the prevention of violence against children and youth by holding trainings, lectures, discussions and round tables.

Activities implemented for the accomplishment of the goals and objectives:

1. Preparation of the launch of the project;

2. A press conference at the start of the project and a press conference for announcing the project results;

3. Selection of participants for the trainings;

4. Establishment of a Youth Volunteer Club for the needs of the project;

5. Organizing and carrying out four-module training;

6. Lectures on the topic of „Peer Education”;

7. TV discussions;

8. Carrying out round tables;

9. Creation of an internet webpage for the needs of the project;

10. Carrying out information campaigns for: May 9th – Europe Day, August 12th – International Youth Day, November 19th – International Day on Prevention of Child Abuse, December 10th – Human Rights Day, creation and broadcast of a 1-minute video clip for the Youth Volunteer Club, creation and broadcast of a 5-minute video clip on the topic of violence.

Results

- provided opportunity for easy access to information about the protection of the fundamental human rights and freedoms;

- a new and up-to-date internet page of the project – focusing the attention of Kyustendil community on looking for solutions to the problem of violence; high number of visitors and considerable interest shown in the topics discussed on the webpage; visualizing the opportunities for the solution of specific problems of the people victims of violence and violated human rights;

- a large-scale information campaign carried out; TV discussions filmed and broadcast –wide publicity for the problems of violence and human rights violation in order to raise public awareness on these issues;

- a four- module training carried out – 20 participants were trained for youth leaders in the area of prevention of violence; the participants gained skills for carrying out peer education, knowledge and skills for teamwork, effective communication and conflict resolution skills, skills for tackling violence situations, skills for holding preventive and training campaigns;

- round tables and lectures on the topic of Peer Education carried out – increased awareness and knowledge gained on the topic of violence, provision of social and institutional support for development and introduction of mechanisms and models for prevention of violence against children and youths, good practices shared between the NGOs;
