Economic Development & Public-private partnerships & Intermunicipal cooperation

In the beginning of 2003 an agreement for cooperation between Razgrad Municipality and Urban International Associates Sofia under MACIP Programme, funded by the VNG International was signed . Razgrad was selected a pilot city for the implementation of one of the three programme components economic development .


The concept of the project was to identify an economically under - developed district and through cooperation to create the appropriate organization and undertaking the needed measures to improve the existing conditions . The cooperative market in the headquarters Orel was the selected district .


Urban International Associates selected the Center for Economic Development in Razgrad to become the project coordinating organization . All tradesmen, working on the territory of the cooperative market in Orel Headquarters were invited to take part and to become partners to this initiative .

The practice of regular meetings between the local administration in Razgrad and representatives of local business was introduced. Active dialogue on Local Economic Development issues was established at these meetings . Managers of well-developed local companies as well as representatives of medium, small and family business companies attended the meetings.

Aiming at finding solutions to local economic problems in 2002 the Agency for Economic Development and Investments Silistra, supported by Municipality of Silistra developed a project to apply to PHARE Cross-Border Cooperation Programme . The project provided training for small and medium enterprises from regions of Silistra and Dobrich to increase knowledge and skills in the process of implementing an appropriate policy and the realization of their production on local and international markets . A relevant approach to create conditions for direct contacts between SME on both sides of the border appeared to be their participation in promotional events and presenting their potential through multimedia presentations and publications , disseminating those within the boundaries of Danube - East Euroregion.

Let s help our own selves is the motto of the project for reducing the unemployment in the Municipality of Omourtag, which uses an innovative approach self-employment. The first stage of the project includes training of unemployed and disadvantaged people in herb growing, while the second one implements the knowledge obtained in practice through growing lavender on municipal land.
